Gord is a certified fire investigator and canine handler with 35 years of investigative experience, supported by a background in policing, interviewing, and interrogation. He is a recognized member of FIAA, IAAI, and NAFI.

Steven Maertens-Poole

Steve Maertens-Poole, BA, MA, MFS (Arson & Explosives) is a certified fire Investigator with over 30 years experience. Along with decades experience with Edmonton Police service as a bomb technician and holds a Master of Forensic Science (Arson & Explosives) from Oklahoma State University. He brings advanced forensic training and investigative expertise to complex fire and explosion cases.

JONNY WEDICK

Jonny is a certified fire investigator with extensive fire investigation and electrical expertise. Holding multiple advanced certifications—including CFEI, CVFI, CFII, RSE, and SCOC Level 2—he is also a Red Seal Electrician and an active City of Edmonton Firefighter, bringing real-world emergency response experience to every investigation. He is also a safety codes officer C2

Devin is a certified fire & explosion investigator with a strong technical and emergency-response background. A Red Seal Power Line Technician, completed second year heavy duty technician and working towards red seal heavy duty technician and Medical First Responder (MFR), he brings a practical, hands-on skill set to every investigation.

Dan Blackburn

Was a former highly experienced EMT-A with Edmonton Fire Services, he brings over 32 years of fire service experience, retiring as a District Chief. He currently serves as a Volunteer Firefighter/Fire Investigator for the Town of Morinville, and provides fire service and emergency management consulting. A Safety Codes Officer and NFPA 1033–qualified Fire Investigator, he offers deep operational leadership and investigative expertise on every case.

A P.Eng. and Senior Mechanical Engineer with 33 years of investigative experience, he is a certified fire & explosion Investigator, specializing in mechanical failures, structural fire investigations, and complex fire and explosion incidents across multiple industries.

With 13 years as a firefighter, he combines frontline emergency response experience with technical expertise as a Red Seal Heavy Equipment Technician and Primary Care Paramedic. A Fire Investigator, he applies practical, real-world knowledge to complex fire and equipment-related investigations.

Odd Gunderson

Odd is a certified fire & explosion investigator (CFEI) and certified vehicle fire investigator (CVFI), as well as a certified detection canine Handler. With 25 years of police dog handler & 20 years working with fire detection canines. Sadie his detection canine is police certified. As the Owner of Alberta Detection Dogs, he brings specialized canine detection capabilities and investigative expertise to support fire scene operations.

Over 45 Years Experience

Can-West Fire investigators are experienced experts in conducting origin and cause fire and explosion investigations throughout western Canada and the Arctic region. We have over 45 years of experience investigating fires.

We provide origin and cause fire and explosion investigations for commercial, residential, industrial, agricultural, automotive, and marine losses. Our investigators are internationally certified and have extensive training in interview techniques, statement analysis, and professional photography, including airborne photography and forward-looking infrared (FLIR) video capturing. Our team of investigators also have additional skillsets with designations including red seal commercial & residential electrician, red seal powerlinesmen, x-ray technician, explosive technician, red seal auto & heavy duty mechanics.

 

With our experience in law enforcement, firefighting, and the insurance industry as special investigators, we understand the needs of the insurance industry and their concerns for potential exposure.
